Ryūkōka was the dominant style of Japanese popular music from the late 1920s through early 1960s, incorporating Western classical influences while maintaining Japanese sensibilities. Unlike its successor enka, ryūkōka employed legato singing rather than the traditional kobushi vocal technique.
