Puirt à beul is a traditional Scottish Gaelic vocal music form that sets Gaelic lyrics to instrumental tune melodies, literally meaning 'tunes from a mouth.' These rhythmic songs were historically used to accompany dancing when instruments were unavailable and to help transmit instrumental melodies through oral tradition.
