Kwela is a street music genre from southern Africa distinguished by its prominent use of the pennywhistle (tin whistle) and jazz-inspired elements. It features a distinctive skiffle-like rhythm and evolved from the earlier marabi sound. Kwela brought South African music to international prominence in the 1950s.
