Kouta are traditional Japanese 'little songs' that originated in Edo period red-light districts, typically lasting no longer than 3 minutes. These intimate pieces are played on shamisen and accompanied by singing and traditional dance, originally popularized by geisha as an alternative to longer nagauta forms.
