A Cuban song form derived from punto cubano, characterized by alternating sections in minor and major keys and lyrics celebrating rural life and romantic love. The genre features the distinctive sesquiáltera rhythm (hemiola) and often idealizes the countryside and peasant lifestyle. Guajira was adopted into Spanish flamenco and became popular in Cuban zarzuela and vernacular theater.
