Group sounds was a Japanese rock genre that emerged in the mid-1960s, representing the first major fusion of Western rock music with Japanese popular music traditions. The genre was characterized by harmonized vocals, electric instrumentation, and Western-influenced arrangements performed by all-male bands. Group sounds marked the beginning of modern Japanese rock and established the template for J-rock that followed.
