Burmese Traditional Music

This genre is not on air yet.

The traditional music of Myanmar: the hsaing waing ensemble of tuned drums and gongs, the saung harp and pattala xylophone, and the classical Mahagita song repertoire, in a tuning and rhythmic language unlike its neighbours.

Also called: burmese mono, myanmar traditional music, burmese classical music

History

Court music of the Burmese kingdoms absorbed Thai and Mon repertoire after the eighteenth-century wars; the Mahagita anthology preserved the classical songs, and recordings from the 1940s captured masters such as U Ko Ko and Sein Be Da.
